A roof underlayment is a layer of material installed on the roof deck, beneath the primary roofing material (such as shingles, tiles, or metal panels). Its primary purpose is to provide an additional barrier against water infiltration and to protect the roof structure from potential damage caused by leaks, wind-driven rain, or other environmental factors.
There are different types of roof underlayments, and the choice often depends on the roofing material and local climate conditions. The two main categories are:
-
Asphalt-saturated felt:
-
Also known as roofing felt or tar paper.
-
Made from organic or fiberglass materials saturated with asphalt.
-
Provides a good barrier against water but may not be as resistant to UV rays and can degrade over time.
-
-
Synthetic underlayment:
-
Made from polyethylene or polypropylene materials.
-
Generally more durable and resistant to UV exposure compared to traditional felt.
-
Lightweight and easier to handle during installation.
-
The roof underlayment is a crucial component of the roofing system, offering temporary protection during the roof installation process and an additional layer of defense against water infiltration in case the primary roofing material is damaged or fails. It acts as a secondary barrier to prevent water from reaching the roof deck and underlying structure, thus helping to extend the lifespan of the roof and protect the interior of the building from water damage.
